Tomb of Sand becomes the first Hindi-language book to win the Booker Prize

These lines are taken from one of the gems written by Geetanjali Shri, "Tomb of Sand" (Ret Samadhi), translated by Daisy Rockwell. This book not only showcases her storytelling finesse but also earned her the prestigious International Booker Prize in 2022.

The protagonist is an 80-year-old woman named Ma, who finds herself lost in sadness after her husband's passing. A decision to journey to Pakistan awakens memories of her teenage years during the Partition, confronting long-held pain. In India, she redefines herself, forming an unexpected bond with a transgender friend. As she challenges convention, her unconventional choices baffle her modern-minded daughter. Ma's insistence on a trip to Pakistan prompts a remarkable voyage of self-discovery, unravelling trauma, and reshaping her roles as a mother, daughter and a feminist.
